Why Washington can’t afford Hudson

Posted by: Alex Murphy

Hudson. Hudson. Hudson. From recently resigned Adam Dunn to GM Rizzo, they’re all saying they want Hudson.

And Supposedly Hudson wants to play for the Nats too, but so far there’s no deal. Rumors says it’s because Hudson wants 9 million, but Washington can only give him 3.

This wouldn’t sound like an obscene amount of money for New York or Los Angeles, and I find it difficult to understand that Washington doesn’t have this money, from an outside of baseball view. New York is the most expensive city in the country as far as cost of living goes, and as a correlation the Yankees and even the Mets have a decent amount of cash to through around. The same goes for other fairly expensive cities with big DMAs like L.A. or Boston. So why isn’t the market size giving the Nationals a few more bucks?

In 2008 Forbes named the nation’s capital as the tenth most expensive city to live in, and it is the ninth biggest TV market in the county meaning those commercials you see watching a game costs a lot more than the same ad played in Tampa or Cincinnati, or a good portion of other teams in the MLB for that matter.

Obviously the team has not reached its full potential for viewers and attendance , and it’s easy to blame the team’s poor showing.

A good example of this is the New York Islanders. For years they’ve had, if not the worst, one of the worst attendance ratings in the whole NHL, but they are in the nation’s biggest market. They’re also not a very good team.

This isn’t any major breakthrough, it’s just a reality that everyone knows as the Nats placed 24th last year in attendance ratings.

Some how the team needs to pull in more cash because there’s no excuse for them not to.  From there they can get players like Hudson, and once they do it will be a cycle of winning and being able to afford more players that can help them win.

State of the Nationals: New optimism and Orlando Hudson

Posted by: Alex Murphy

“There’s no way we’ll lose 100 games,” said Nats’ Ryan Zimmerman during an interview with the Washington Post.

Talk about aiming low. “We won’t lose 100 games,” but I guess you could call this optimism. Zimmerman goes on to discuss how the young team learned to lose and understand why, and now they’re ready for the opposite. To win.

Also in the interview he talks about the excitement of playing in the nation’s capital and their strong fan support. Not to mention the fan’s love for Nationals Park.

Definitely an article worth checking out.

In another Nationals news, all week long there’s been talk about Orlando Hudson.

Rumors are still circulating about Hudson, but MLB writer Bill Ladson reported he is too expensive for the team, but so far no rumors have been killed either way on whether or not he could become a Nat.

Also in the rumor mill are whispers about Johnny Damon, but if the team can’t afford Hudson I doubt they could afford Damon.

The opposite of baseball season

Posted by: Alex Murphy

The actual season has been over for awhile now and it seems like it’s taking forever to get just to the Spring Training games. I’m having trouble comprehending those who complain the season is too long.

Still there are signs that the 2010 season is on its way. A simple one being the release of TV’s schedule of games.

As always some more rumors are circling the team as far as buying some more players, but as of right now nothing more seems to really be in the works.

Now its just a matter of finalizing everything and then things can finally get underway.

Some recent Nationals news

Posted by: Alex Murphy

According to mlb.com’s Nats writer, “Jason Bergmann, Brian Bruney, Sean Burnett, Jesus Flores, Wil Nieves and Josh Willingham” have all filed for arbitration this past Friday.

Also making headlines is both fans and players waiting to see what happens with free agent 2B Orlando Hudson.  Some on the Nats want to see the team sign Hudson who most recently played for the Dodgers and have previously played for the Arizona and Toronto.  He was a strong force on a very successful LA team last year and if signed hopefully he’ll bring that to Washington.

Rumors circulate about potential interest in Randy Winn

Posted by: Alex Murphy

Recently, the Nats have put a lot of effort into signing some strong pitchers and a catcher, but now they need to worry about what happens to the ball if it doesn’t make it from the pitches hand to the catchers glove and goes screeching into the outfield.

It’s no secret the team’s outfield was pretty close to infamous last year and now the team may be looking to improve with former San Fransisco Giant Randy Winn.

Winn had a pretty decent season last year playing in 149 games, and even recorded his 200th stolen base. Despite being 35-years-old he also has shown to be still a fairly decent right fielder, but he’s also not getting any younger with his batting average declining every year for the last three years straight.

Supposedly right now according to, both the Padres and Diamondbacks are also interested.

A lot of rumors have followed the Nationals in the last few months, such as RHP Matt Capps.  Well now Capps is on the team. So we’ll have to see what happens with this one.
